If there's one thing the existence of Metallagher proves, it's that portmanteau-based novelty bands are only as good as what their name promises. But what could have been a throwaway Family Guy joke in less capable hands turns out to be a pretty amazing spectacle. You've got to give credit to anyone who can switch gears so effortlessly from Gallagher's nasal goofball observational prop comedy to full-throttle James Hetfield bellow, like Metallagher frontman Brent Hedtke does. And since the band tends to stick to the '80s vintage thrash wheelhouse that legit metal diehards venerated Metallica for, it's not out of the question to assume that these guys still have a certain sense of reverence about them. They already have some instantly notorious shows under their belt (including a December '09 Station 4 double bill with the genuine Gallagher that saw their comedy namesake get uncomfortably hateful), so of course they'd be a good bet to stage a memorably chaotic New Year's Eve show. Lots of things tend to drop on December 31—the ball in Times Square, the inhibitions of partygoers, various passed-out bodies—so why not add a watermelon-bound sledgehammer to the itinerary? And hey, it's not a truly great Auld Lang Syne unless you wake up the next day covered in debris with your ears ringing. 21+.

If the idea of a Metallica cover band fronted by a Gallagher impersonator sounds like a one-joke premise, it absolutely is. Most importantly, however, is that it’s a hilarious joke—and that’s one more than the actual Gallagher, who famously uses his Sledge-O-Matic to smash melons to distract from his dated pop-culture references and embarrassingly juvenile “observational” humor. Ironically, Metallagher doesn’t need any distractions: Its thundering renditions of pre-Black Album Metallica songs are surprisingly spot-on, with faux-Gallagher doing a passable James Hetfield when he’s not offering his deliberately weak punch lines. Together they make for one of the most bafflingly entertaining times you’re likely to have in all of 2010, so go ahead and peak early with this New Year’s Eve show that also features Altercation Comedy honcho JT Habersaat and cover bands Empty Bottles (Murder City Devils), Stabba (ABBA), and Manzig (duh).

When the show was announced, it seemed like the perfect opportunity for profound disaster: Prop-comedy hippie/conservative comedy "legend" Gallagher, on tour in Saint Paul, would be performing with local metal/comedy act Metallagher. Rumors swirled: would they perform together? (No.) Would the notoriously critical comedian and ruthlessly satirical band clash on stage? (No.) Would there be beer bongs? (No.) Who actually goes to a Gallagher show anymore? (A lot of people, apparently.)

Inside Station 4, the front of the show room had been blocked off for those who paid $20 for good seats, with a barricade keeping the standing crowd out. It was by the barricade that I first saw the man himself: no suspenders, no hat, no striped sweater, just a guy with graying long hair working the room in a pre-show meet and greet he'd done a thousand times before. After a few dozen photos he strode directly on stage, no costume change, and immediately launched into a set that somehow managed to be offensive, bitter, rambling, anachronistic, and self-parodying all at once.

Gays. Lesbians. Arabs. "China-people." Gang members. Celebrity "whores." Just a few targets of Gallagher's uniquely self-centered conservative view of social order. The crowd, an uncomfortable mix of dedicated fans, irony-seekers, punks, and metalheads, had an equally mixed reaction. There were plenty of people in hysterics and even a few cheering and clapping like they were at a Michelle Bachmann rally. Elsewhere, some folks weren't so impressed: boos, groans, and, at one point, a patron said, frustrated, "It's not fair that this guy outlived George Carlin."

Ultimately, though, the act was about smashing food, almost 90 minutes building up to that grand finale, all with a hint of tired cynicism. The denouement, however, best served those in the pricey seats; the rest of the room was so crowded that it was hard to see what Gallagher was doing, and it ended almost as quickly as it started.

After a pace-killing break to move chairs and clean up, Metallagher took the stage, singer/"impersonator" Brent Hedtke in more-Gallagher-than-Gallagher regalia, down to the hat and sweater. The rest of the band brought the Metallica side of the equation in full force, ripping through a number of beloved, mostly old-school songs, while Hedtke mostly skipped the customary between-song jokes (perhaps because of the notoriously anti-opening act Gallagher) and stuck with showering the audience with smashed watermelons, mystery fluid from a giant squirtgun, and a freshly delivered pizza (smashed by the delivery driver himself).

Still, the fun came with an awareness of what we'd just witnessed. "You guys like Gallagher?" Hedtke asked. "I liked the racist parts," someone yelled back. On a few occasions Hedtke seemed tempted to break into an actual Gallagher joke and then thought better of it, as if the absurd, cynical experience of the actual Gallagher had left no room for anything else.

"I'm using Gallagher's stage hammer tonight," Hedtke announced, "and I don't know how I feel about it."

Yes, that Gallagher, he of '80s comedy fame whose TV specials were ubiquitous in the bad old days of Reagan. The one-named comedian is best known for his Sledge-O-Matic, a giant wooden mallet he uses to pound various food items, mostly fruit, into smithereens. But while the dinner-destroying gimmick has come to define him, casting Gallagher as a novelty act (which, okay, he kind of is), his mostly innocuous material was laced with populist anger at yuppies and rampant Republicanism. Following the man himself is the heavy-metal concept band Metallagher, which is exactly what it sounds like: a group of dudes doing Metallica covers while the lead singer dons a Gallagher getup and smashes yet more fruit. The band's co-founders cooked up the quirky idea while detoxing in a drunk tank. Lead singer Brent Hedke says he hopes the real Gallagher appreciates the joke. "In his defense...at this point I'm more or less doing an impression of someone doing an impression of him and apparently that person is a fat, drunk lunatic. Hopefully he gets that we're not shitting on him or doing it out of malice. It's just a funny idea that I like to think I would be cool with were I the target of it. Basically what I'm saying is that he's probably going to try and murder me."* Tickets are $10, or $20 to sit close enough to absorb melon shrapnel. 21+.

-The first, and most obvious question, is where in the hell did you
guys get this crazy idea for a band? I read in an old interview you
were in a drunk tank at the time, which is perhaps half an
explanation.

Brent: Yes, I honestly thought of the idea in detox. Apparently it's
illegal to hitch hike in nothing but a jockstrap and a pair of flip
flops at 2pm on a saturday. The cool thing about detox is that you
have to be really shithoused to get to go there so for the first
couple hours you're there you're still pretty drunk and it's like
hanging out a bar. So in that time we were just thinking of shit to
make each other laugh and my friend said something about metallica
but it came out in mushmouth drunk speak and I heard metallagher. I
laughed about it and sort of logged in my ever growing bank of funny
ideas that I'll never pursue. When my grandmother read that story in
the star tribune a few years back she said "Hmmmm....what's this I
hear about you being in the drunk tank?" and I had to tell her "No,
no, no, Grandmother, that's a typo. It's supposed to say DUNK tank.
I was at a fair....in a dunk tank.....sober".

Anyway, a year or so after my stay at the Dakota County Resort and
Spa my band was on tour with Pete's band and we were in Florida or
some shit and it was just miserable and we got to talking about how
good cover bands had it with how much money they made and I
mentioned the idea of metallagher to him and we both kind of
shrugged it off. A few weeks later we were taking a piss at
The Triple Rock and he brought up the idea of seriously doing
it so we hashed out the particulars and spent the rest of the night
laughing about how dumb it was and now six years later I'm
discussing it with you in a widely distributed newspaper.

-What is it exactly that drew you to Metallica, and what drew you to Gallagher?

Pete: We had the name and thought it was a funny concept. I learned
how to play guitar when I was a kid by putting on Metallica CDs and
learning the songs. Then I'd get together with my friends on the
weekend and we'd play them. Our bass player Jim (Cliff Burgerton)
was one of those friends. We had known Adam (Lars Casserole) for a
long time and he knew all of the drum parts. Since we knew all of
the songs, Metallica just seemed like the way to go. The only thing
missing was another guitar player. We asked a few people we knew
and no one wanted to do it. I think we barely knew Jason (Kirk Ham
Sandwich) but we saw him playing darts in a bar one night and asked
if he knew how to play the songs and if he'd be willing to do it.
He was into it, so we got started

The draw to Gallagher mostly came from the fruit smashing. We've
got a whole list of band name/comedian mash-ups that sound funny
on paper, but in the end, if you play music and throw food at
people, you're going to end up having a good time. Sure,
Guns n' Roseanne and Tony Danzig are funny names, but without the
theatrics, props, and chaos, it would get old really fast.

-In the old Strib article I read, one of you guys referred to the
G-man as perhaps the least funny person to have ever existed. Do you
think this is so? And if so, what do you anticipate it will be like to
share a stage with him? Have you ever corresponded with him at all?

Pete: Bryan, you know how the media is. You say something
amazing in an interview, like "Gallagher isn't funny," and they go
printing it. It's bullshit.

Brent: I actually will seriously answer this. Metallagher is just a
really awesome word and a funny concept so in me parodying his act
there is gonna be an interpretation that he may not find overly
flattering or that could be deemed offensive. When we first started
doing this we thought that the more accurate and tighter the music
was and the better the impression and the more verbatim the jokes
were, the funnier it would be just based solely on the fact that
anyone would put any time at all into such a retarded idea. In his
defense, we have deviated so far from that idea that at this point
I'm more or less doing an impression of someone doing an impression
of him and apparently that person is a fat, drunk lunatic. So he's
obviously not the least funny person ever (that's apparently Jeff
Dunham's job) and I was half joking when I said that. It's just
that unless he is the greatest proponent of meta humor and
performance art ever, I think it's hard for people of our/my
generation to relate to his act. Comedy is entirely subjective
anyway so who what the fuck do I know?

Hopefully he gets that we're not shitting on him or doing it out of
malice. It's just a funny idea that I like to think I would be
cool with were I the target of it. Basically what I'm saying is
that he's probably going to try and murder me.

-You guys cover only old Metallica. What's wrong with new Metallica?

Pete: I like some of the new Metallica, but I think if you
ask most people who are, or ever have been, into Metallica, you
find that almost EVERYONE likes the old stuff. Our show is a big
fuckin' party. It's not about art or technical proficiency. We just
want to make sure everyone has an awesome time.

Brent: I really don't have an opinion one way or the other on
metallica. I was never really into them. Apparently other people
really prefer the old stuff though so I feel it's my job to stand up
there and drunkenly screw up the lyrics to these beloved songs that I
didn't bother to learn. War is hell.

Some people attribute weather changes, fortunate or otherwise, to God. The Riverboat Gamblers' Mike Wiebe thought someone else was responsible for the all-day drizzle and showers that turned Waterloo Park into Mudderloo Park.
"Someone said, 'It was sunny yesterday, I'm surprised it's rainy now,'" he said during his band's set. "I'm like, 'Are you fucking kidding me? Danzig is here.
He flew in on a black pterodactyl. The crops are dying. It's because fucking Glenn Danzig is here!'" As for me, I blame myself for taunting the elements with this ridiculous post about the pretty scenery and lack of Zilker Park mud and dust. Whatever the cause, the weather and slick mud thinned the crowds but couldn't dampen some truly great performances.
Metallagher 3 p.m.
The band is exactly what the name implies: a comedy-metal tribute to Gallagher and Metallica, a mashup that is surely the most brilliant moment of drunken inspiration in the history of musical comedy. Backed by a surprisingly competent Metallica tribute band, a grimy Gallagher impersonator sings Hetfield's lyrics with occasional "suck my dick" improvisations, then smashes fruit during instrumental parts and tells Gallagher's awful xenophobic, chauvenist and just plain stupid jokes between songs. ("I don't fly TWA. I think it stands for Traveling With Arabs. I prefer Delta: Don't Even Let Them Aboard!") It's completely absurd, sing-along awesome and hilarious. "You guys have some weird fruit down here," "Gallagher" said, holding up some unidentfiable thick-skinned fruit. He smashed it with an overhead blow from the Sledge-o-matic, sending red pulp spraying across an audience of people who appeared glad to be wearing raingear and carrying umbrellas. "Twenty bucks, whatever the fuck that was." It was certainly funnier than the real Gallagher, and almost as great as the real Metallica.

The name pretty much says it all. Metallica covers plus lots of smashed foodstuffs, ala unstoppable prop comic Gallagher.

What the name of Minneapolis troupe Metallagher doesn’t give away is how well those two components go together, as evidenced by the dropped jaws and continual cheers the five piece received Sunday at Fun Fun Fun Fest.

With its instrumentalists donning Nelson-esque metal hair wigs, the band peeled through “Creeping Death,” “Battery,” “Blackened” and closing number “One” while its Gallagher impersonator doubled as a fine James Hetfield when not tossing off purposely lame sexual politics jokes from the ’80s that have aged about as well as salmon left in the sun.

Which was all part of the plan, of course, and helped to amp the ridiculous factor even higher than whatever obliterating a watermelon, bananas, a tub of cottage cheese and jug of fruit juice with a sledgehammer will get you.

It wasn’t high concept, but as an early afternoon breather between acts on the Yellow Stage, it was almost perfect. Someone deserves a medal for this.

Day two of Fun Fun Fun Fest began with a slow and steady rain shower that turned into an all-day headliner. As we walked the ground and felt the rain soak into our clothes we started getting ACL flashbacks. Before we knew it we were walking through acres of mud and muck, albeit clean muck, free of reconstituted fecal matter. That's always high on our list of priorities.

Metallagher on the small Yellow stage on the south side of the venue pretty much made up for the rain in our eyes. The band is a Metallica and Gallagher cover band, donning wigs playing covers of some of Hetfield and company's best tracks. Their lead singer wields a sledgehammer and lays waste to large round fruits just like the real Gallagher, in between sporadic bouts of "comedy" with sample topics including "Ehh-rabs," women and bathroom difficulties.

Is it an act of absurd serendipity or an unholy union forged in cursed blood?

It was announced late yesterday--Metallagher, the local Metallica-cover band featuring a Gallagher-impersonating frontman, will be performing with the real live Gallagher (yes, he of the watermelon and the bad pun) on December 10 at Station 4.

We aren't prepared to say that Gallagher has achieved "so-bad-he's-good" status, like so many ironic appetites have (you'd be hard pressed to find a copy of Melon Crazy in even the most snarkily hip hipster's album crate).

And yet this move strikes Gimme Noise as incredibly winning. The instant redeemer of all sins and transgressions is the self-effacing joke. And Gallagher's decision to let the grandest pun on his name, Metallagher, open for him shows, at the least, that Gallagher has a sense of humor about himself, if not about high-brow comedy.

We'll make the prediction now--those lucky enough to attend, and to see Gallagher perform his act before an intimate crowd, will find themselves willing participants in the charade, endeared by the prop-comic as they never imagined possible, and that Cheapo discs will record a sizeable spike in sales of the Melon-man's records.

We're intrigued. And as easily as we've made Gallagher the butt of tailspinning career jokes, we find ourselves already smirking, ready to re-evaluate a career that might have gotten more shit than it deserves.

We had a friend talking to some people at MTV about getting Metallagher on some show that had to do with the release of the new Rock Band Video Game.

Turns out they had to drop it because Metallica wouldn't give permission to have the song "Battery" played on TV.

Not that almost being on MTV is News. It's about as cool as being best friends with the guy who played Wayne on the Wonder Years, but it's all I got for ya.

RIP Earl Root

I was not particularly close to Earl Root of Root of All Evil Records and the Root of All Evil radio show, but I was a fan. I did have the privilege of meeting Earl a few times before he died, and he was nothing short of an awesome guy in addition to being an important part of Minneapolis music.

There is an interview that he did with us posted on our (myspace) page.

An Open Letter to Metallagher
Hi. My name is Bill. You might not know me but I've been a fan of yours since Jess told me about you last summer. I went and saw you open for D4 on the fourth of July and you were hilariously awesome. The whole idea of mixing Metallica and Gallagher was executed perfectly. I laughed and rocked in a way that neither act could provide on it's own.

I saw you again a couple of months later and it was just as good. An article was written about you in the Star Tribune and the house was almost completely sold out.

Then I heard that you were performing your last show ever opening for Doug Stanhope last Saturday. I was disappointed to hear that you were breaking up but excited to see you one more time. I told all of my friends about how I saw you twice and how amazing you were. When I got to the show Doug Stanhope was opening for you because who would want to follow you? You went on stage and half assed the entire performance. You didn't even have the Gallagher wig because you said you lost it at a previous show. You would start shitty Gallagher bits between songs but not follow through with them. Sure fruit was smashed but it seemed like you were going through the motions.

You broke my heart, Metallagher. You broke my heart.

Metallica and Gallagher are still here, but Metallagher, sadly, are no more. The local cover band, which paid homage to the heavy-metal legends and mustachioed prop comic, played a farewell set Saturday at the Triple Rock after a warm-up from two comedians. Peoria stand-up Travis Lipski bombed hard, but with such dark humor ("Seat belts save lives--not if you're waiting for an organ transplant") and masochism ("My mother molested me") that audience rejection seemed part of the plan. Girls Gone Wild's Doug Stanhope more than lived down his "Show me where babies feed" celebrity--"one dumb thing I said when I was drunk inadvertently turned into my 'Git-R-Done'"--by whacking similar taboos with righteous zeal. (It's the job of an instinctive truth-teller to leave us with the image, for instance, of Hendrix as a living lame-o, playing Superbowl halftime with Elton John.) Metallagher played the hits ("Creeping Death," "Fade to Black") and smashed the food (watermelons, apples, a giant jar of Miracle Whip), kindling fond nostalgia all around (in my case, for Gallagher's early-'80s Showtime specials, including his Sledge-O-Matic spoof of Ronco-type commercials, in which he simply brought out a giant sledgehammer and smashed stuff. Sorry, but no amount of abuse from MST3K can rob this act of its childlike charms). In case anyone took the breakup announcement as an April Fool's joke, both Metallagher's main Gallagher impersonator and "Gallagher 1" (the backup) ripped up their rainbow shirts. (Gallagher 1: "Why do you ever want me to come back to this?") Lipski, meanwhile, redeemed his heckled self by allowing a melon to be smashed on his stomach--applause at last!

Metallagher is done.

To address the rumors:
A) Yes, we are done. It was not an April Fool's Joke. Not to say that we would never do another show, but not any time soon. Maybe next year. It has not been discussed.

B) No, there is no plan for starting any other prop-comic fronted heavy metal bands
(ie: Tony Danzig, Guns n' Roseanne, etc...)

night, Metallagher decided that the last show will be
Saturday with Doug Stanhope.

This is not a seasonal break. This is it.

People keep asking me why Metallagher is done.

WE'RE NOT!

We're just done for now.

I have a broken, watermelon covered guitar to fix, and a memory of weird ass shows to erase with gallons of alcohol. I need a break.

We are 99% sure that we are playing South By Southwest Music Festival in Austin, Texas in March.

We will probably play shows next year, but we are going to be very selective about what we play.

This isn't a normal band where we can just show up, play, load out, and leave. Its more of a pain in the ass than that. So don't be offended when we don't want to play your Tuesday Night Metal Maniac Show where all of your best friends will be there farting out Metallica lyrics and throwing fruit at my expensive equipment.

We know that there are a lot of good shows that will be in front of a lot of people, but its not like we're trying to get signed.

Plus its not even watermelon season.

As I'm told, there is some kind of force field surrounding the city of La Crosse, Wisconsin that erases any memory of Gallagher that you ever had, and the Members of Metallagher are immune to it. I think maybe 1/90th of the people at the show knew who Gallagher was and got the joke. Everyone else looked like this:They seemed into the Metallica part at least.either that or they actually realized how much we suck.

Sometimes people get drunk at a Days Inn in West Allis, WI at 4 in the morning after a 5 plus hour road trip. Sometimes they throw and kick empty beer cases around the room, spin coat hangers for pure amusement, shout obsenities and slur sentences, fall into walls and other stationary furnishings. Also, sometimes their pants come off.

If you ever find yourself in a situation like this - we've found that if you bet them $40 ($20 per page) that they can't write an essay on Metallagher that they actually will sit down, keep quiet and turn in their homework...

"Have you ever experienced fruit stained shirts, ringing ears from metal rage, or hangovers on a Tuesday? If you answered yes to any of these questions, chances are you’ve experienced a Metallagher show. Imagine a watermelon being smashed in your face as you get smoked in the groin by a grapefruit while watching “Blackened.” “Fade to Black” plays in your ears as an orange zings by your grill. “The Last Caress” plays as you take some chocolate pudding to the temple. Speaking of which, the music is played masterfully, just as Metallica had envisioned it, but with the legion of Metallica cover bands growing bloated, an added variable has been brought into the equation.

What makes Metallagher different is the fact that they don’t care. You could spit on their gear and shit on their van, and chances are, they’d pay a homeless dude to take a picture of them with it.

Metallagher are the future generation of cover bands, a smattering of precision without the grace. A fusion of comedy without the pretense, an innovation has been brought fourth that would seem futile to replicate and seemless to regurgitate.

A pseudo version of Prop comedian Gallagher fronts this band, and well that may not interest you, the hybrid of comedy/metal explosion most certainly will.

What started as a tipsy halled pipe dream of one Brench Toast, the fusion of prop comedy and metal has only begun to unfurl.

A market seems to have been tapped, a catalog of undiscovered fans has been relocated, and everywhere you turn, the word is spreading; prepare for a applecore to the jollypatch!

Metallagher Banned From Mad Planet!!!

Metallagher was banned from our first venue: Mad Planet in Milwauke. We were complimented on how well we cleaned after the show by employees there. The sound guy had a frog up his ass the whole night, and had a problem with having to clean the cords even though we cleaned most of his cords. We did break a microphone, but we fucking paid for it. I thought everything was cool until I wrote a thank you e-mail to the promoter Jeremy. Here was his reply:

"I would love to have ya back. Next time we will do it at Onopa. The sound man tells me that both you and I are banded from the Mad Planet. Fuck em. Before you got there they were mentoring me in the ways to get out of guarantees. Give me a few months to get settled and we will do it again. I truly loved it, I would have loved it more had I not had to worry about Rose. See ya soon, Jeremy"

Come party with Metallagher in Milwaukee THIS WEEKEND!!!

First off I just wanted to say thanks to all of you who made it out to our show with THOR on Monday! What an amazing night!

Our next show is in Milwaukee, WI this Saturday and there has been some interest in assembling a Metallagallacaravan to road trip, hit up the show, and party our asses off the whole friggin weekend!

So here's the deal... We have booked 2 rooms at $100 plus tax per room per night (hey, it was the best we could find on such short notice) Both for Friday and Saturday night at a Days Inn less than 20 minutes from the venue. The rooms have 2 beds, are smoker friendly, and are of decent size. Right now we told them we'd have about 8 total people between the two rooms, I don't know how much trouble we'll get into if we surpass that and we definately can't be held responsible if things go sour.

Right now we have 10 people, bringing the cost to $43/person total for the stay over the weekend. The plan is to meet up somewhere and leave here Friday night around 7ish and come back home sometime on Sunday once we're sober enough to drive again.

The show is part of an Import Bike Festival put on by Mad Planet (http://www.mad-planet.net) and we are playing the Rockerbox after party Saturday Aug 20 @ 8:00P with The Luxury Pushers and others. It's 21+ and as of right now we are not sure how much the show is going to cost. I can't imagine it's going to be much though.
